21 March 1896 Britain’s first cinema opens

It was opened on the 21st March 1896 by cinema pioneer Birt Acres at 2 Piccadilly Mansions, located at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Piccadilly Circus. It was called the Kineopticon, but it was destroyed by fire shortly after opening.
