1799  Napoleon Bonaparte becomes new leader of France.

1909  Birth of American actress Katherine Hepburn.

1938  The Jewish community in Nazi Germany is attacked with thousands of shops looted and 267 synagogues burned in what has become known as Kristallnacht, Translated as “Night of Broken Glass”, these orchestrated attacks continued into the following day. Thirty six people died during the rampage and over 20000 were arrested.

1940  Birth of former British prime minister Neville Chamberlain.

1953  Death of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

1960  John F Kennedy wins the US presidential election.
